Mr. Joseph A. Dugan, 76, of Halifax (formerly of Weymouth) died at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 18, 2009. Born in Weymouth on November 30, 1932, Mr. Dugan was raised in Boston. He graduated from Boston State Teachers' College in 1960, earned a Master's Degree in Education from Bridgewater State College in 1965, and attended Northeastern and Harvard Universities. Mr. Dugan served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and served as a public school teacher and administrator in Weymouth, Hingham, and Watertown. While working as a teacher in Weymouth, Mr. Dugan represented teachers in negotiating the first-ever union contract for town educators. Mr. Dugan was an elected public official, serving as a Weymouth Town Meeting Member; member of the Weymouth Democratic Town Committee; and a member of the Weymouth School Committee for 2 terms, including several years as Chairman. He enjoyed gardening, sports, politics, and especially his family.
He is survived by his wife Susan "Betty" E. (Palmer) Dugan; his sons, Joseph, Paul, William, John, David, and Robert Dugan; his daughters, Mary D'Ambra and Elizabeth Dugan Moran; sons- and daughters-in-law, Kathy, Jimmy, Adele, Jack, Jerry, Kate, Pena, Kim, and Cindy; 12 grandchildren, Brian, Jenny, Jimmy Jr., Danielle, Emma, Isabelle, Jared, Scott, Jack, Caroline, Daniel and Mary; a sister, Dorothy Zaniboni; and a brother Francis Dugan. He was grandfather of the late Baby Rose and brother of the late Edward and Charles Dugan and Louise McMillen.
Visitation at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 580 Monponsett St., Rte. 58, in Halifax on Saturday from 10-10:45 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM. Interment Private.
